Aspen Dental in Richmond offering free exams for uninsured
Richmond, Ky. (WTVQ) — Aspen Dental in Madison County is offering free dental exams and x-rays for people without insurance. The practice opened on Thursday, September 17, in a county known as a dental health professional shortage area by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. That designation means things like distance, cost, resources and availability make it hard for everyone living in the area to see a dentist. Fifty-seven of Kentucky’s 120 counties are in a shortage area.
“The opportunity to provide that service is spectacular to me because you don’t realize until it’s gone the idea of not being able to smile or speak or eat,” says Dr. David Devito, dentist at the Richmond, Kentucky office and recent University of Kentucky graduate. “Making people feel comfortable, it can be life changing for a lot of people.”
According to the non-profit group, Kentucky Oral Health Coalition, Kentucky has the fifth highest rate of toothlessness for adults 65 and older. Doctor Devito says he has seen everything at the Richmond clinic from college kids putting off a visit to the dentist to more severe problems. “On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have patients who have not seen a dentist in the past 20 years,” says Devito. “My goal is to provide that opportunity to catch up and get back on the right track of their oral health.”
