Asbury students learn TV sitcom production from long-time Hollywood director

WILMORE, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Asbury University media department has officially wrapped on the tenth and final episode of Friends Like You.

The Emmy-winning, original sitcom is written and directed by former Benson, Golden Girls and Empty Nest director Doug Smart.

Students make up the rest of the cast and crew.

“The class is the crew,” said Smart. “The camera operators, the boom operators, the people who decorated the set, hung the lights, they’re all members of the class.”

Smart explains the work the students do on set is the same as what they would do on a sitcom set in Hollywood.

Every episode of the sitcom has aired on WBNA in Louisville, and once post-production finishes, Smart says this episode will too.

Smart says, to his knowledge, Asbury is the only school in the country that offers a class like this.

Now, it is coming to and end. For Smart, ending his 37 year career in TV sitcoms is bittersweet. However, students who’ve worked with him say what he has done for them, and for the university, will not be soon forgotten.

“I feel like a lot of people are going to look back and remember when he started Friends Like You and all the people that went through it and all the jokes that happened and just what a fun process it was,” said student actress Sarah Nesselroade. “He really did leave a legacy.”
