Arrests made in cab driver’s murder

NEWPORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Three people are arrested, accused of killing a Northern Kentucky taxi driver.

David DePhillips was shot to death Tuesday night in Newport.

According to WCPO in Cincinnati, police say a witness identified 20-year-old Justin Russell as the shooter. A tip also led police to 19-year-old Alyssa Baker and 18-year-old Jarrett Anness.

All three face murder charges in DePhillips’ death.

Police tell WCPO they believe the shooting was the result of a botched heroin deal. They say it’s likely one party attempted to buy drugs using counterfeit money and when the counterfeits were discovered, they say Russell attacked DePhillips.

Police say DePhillips drove about a block and a half after being shot but crashed into three parked cars and a tree in the 900 block of Washington Avenue.

He died at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
