Area secure after tractor trailer carrying hazmat catches fire in Whitley Co.

Williamsburg, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Williamsburg Fire Department says quick response saved the day when a tractor trailer carrying hazmat caught fire.

Officers say it happened Wednesday around 7:00 a.m. on I-75 southbound near the 12 mile marker in Whitley Co. Investigators say the brakes on the tractor trailer got hot and caught fire.  The fire spread to the rear trailer area, which was carrying the hazmat heptafluoropropane.

The fire was quickly contained and the hazmat was not affected.  The slow lane of travel was shut down for around 2 hours while emergency crews worked to clean the debris from the roadway and inspect the hazardous material.
