Another windy, cold day to endure before a mild weekend
Friday starts frigid with little improvement through the day
A strong cold front moved through last night, bringing the Bluegrass downpours and thunder. It brought many nearly an inch of rain, and here in Lexington, we saw nearly half an inch. 1.43″ was recorded at the Bluegrass Airport. We got a few tenths of an inch more early this morning as a lagging secondary cold front swept through. This front had some rainfall, but mainly brought a large temperature drop. Temperatures went from the low 40s to the 20s by mid-morning.
Winds have also picked up behind the front, gusting up to 35-40 mph. This causes feels-like temperatures to be in the teens for this morning and the 20s through the afternoon. Wind will calm through the evening and will become southerly overnight,
A milder weekend ahead
Saturday starts off chilly in the 20s, but through the morning, winds will pick up. They’ll gust up to 30 mph out of the south, ushering in some warmer air. Afternoon temperatures will be in the 50s, with a gradient of slightly cooler temperatures north and slightly warmer temperatures south. Skies will be partly cloudy.
Sunday also starts cold, with little wind. Afternoon temperatures will stay in the low-mid 40s, a tad cooler than Saturday.
Trending mild and unsettled for the holiday
Next week, a ridge of high pressure builds into the area. This allows warmer, southern air to stay in the Blugrass, and we’ll be around 10-15 degrees above average through next week. Expect highs in the upper 50s on some days. A few disturbances may move through this ridge, and this will cause the potential for some scattered showers from Monday to Wednesday. Christmas Day, as of now, is trending drier, but this could change as nothing is set in stone. It will likely be warmer, nearing 60 degrees for many.
