Another pop-up storm chance as muggy pattern continues

Additional pop-up storms in the forecast Tuesday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – We’re stuck in a classic July pattern across central and eastern Kentucky—hot, muggy, and stormy at times.

Tuesday starts off muggy, with early sunshine quickly giving way to clouds and scattered storms. Not everyone will see rain today, but the atmosphere is primed with deep tropical moisture, and isolated to widely scattered pop-up storms are likely to fire up this afternoon. Any storm that develops will be capable of localized heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning. Expect highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, though it’ll feel more like the mid to upper 90s at times thanks to the humidity.

Tonight, any lingering storms will taper off after sunset. Skies will turn partly cloudy with patchy fog likely in the valleys by daybreak. Lows will be mild and muggy, ranging from the low to mid 70s.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Wednesday looks like a more active weather day. A weak disturbance moving through the region will provide some added lift, making scattered showers and thunderstorms more likely, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. We’re not expecting widespread severe weather, but brief downpours and isolated flooding could become an issue, especially where storms repeat over the same areas.

By Friday, rain chances increase even more. The Weather Prediction Center already has eastern Kentucky in a Level 2 (Slight Risk) for flash flooding, meaning the atmosphere is primed for heavier rounds of rain with the potential for localized flooding. Stay weather aware as we approach the end of the workweek.

The weekend into early next week won’t bring much change. The ridge of high pressure over the Southeast will remain in place, continuing to funnel in heat and moisture. We’ll be watching for more organized clusters of storms potentially diving in from the northwest—some of which could carry heavier rain and stronger winds.

We’re in a typical Kentucky mid-July setup, but with an elevated flood risk as the week wears on. Keep checking in with the ABC 36 Storm Team for updates throughout the week as storm coverage ramps up.
