AG cyber crimes unit finds no threat to Georgetown Middle School after investigation
FRANKFORT, KY. (WTVQ) – Attorney General Andy Beshear’s Cyber Crimes Unit has determined after a thorough investigation that there is no threat against Georgetown Middle School in Scott County.
Earlier this week students and parents shared a post on Instagram about a threat against “GMS” that was to occur on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The post told students not to go to “GMS” because violence could occur.
The Scott County Sheriff’s Office reached out to Beshear’s cyber investigators who investigated the post by sending emergency requests to Instagram and other social media platforms and a mobile carrier who shared information with Beshear’s office.
The investigation by cyber investigators led them to a middle school in Gaithersburg, Maryland, which the “GMS” reference was referring to in the post on Instagram.
Cyber investigator Michael Littrell immediately contacted law enforcement in Gaithersburg who said they were aware of the threat and were taking appropriate measures to investigate and to ensure students were safe in their community.
