Rebuilding burned barn at Old Friends Farm in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WTVQ) — Old Friends plans to rebuild after a fire destroyed a barn over the weekend.

The thoroughbred retirement farm started a GoFundMe, to replace the medical barn that burned to the ground January 23.

When the fire started early that morning, farm founder Michael Blowen says two horses were still inside. Volunteers quickly got the horses out and no one was seriously hurt.

As of noon on the 28th, more than 200 people have donated to help the cause, including retired Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron.

Old Friends received a $50,000 donation from Fasig-Tipton’s Blue Horse Charities towards to rebuilding of the barn. The new barn will be named in honor of John Hettinger, who created Blue Horse Charities.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Blowen plans to rebuild both barns on the farm making them fire-resistant.
