A fantastic Mothers Day is in store for Kentucky
Meteorologist Jordan Smith has your Saturday evening ABC 36 Storm Team forecast
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Good Saturday evening everyone, it has been a below average temperature day across the Commonwealth with a few dodging some scattered showers as well. But skies are clearing from north to south across the area this evening and that is setting the stage for a FANTASTIC Mothers Day on our Sunday! But first we have another rare opportunity to see the Northern Lights here in Kentucky tonight all thanks to a geomagnetic storm bringing solar flares to the lower 48.
Skies should be mainly clear across our part of the world letting us see this phenomenal event once again. Best time frame is 10:00pm – 2:00am. Last night you all sent in hundreds and hundreds of pictures and I have enjoyed looking at each and everyone of them. I had such a hard time picking just four to throw on this graphics, but here you go.
Make sure to send in all your pictures again tonight! Now lets focus our attention to all you wonderful moms out there for our Mothers Day forecast. After starting on a chilly note, it is looking beautiful the rest of the day with highs in the low to mid 70s under a mix of sun and clouds.
An unsettled pattern moves back in on Monday bringing back the chance at seeing scattered showers and storms. It is not an all day rain by any means and some areas may get by without seeing any rain. Highs will be in the low to mid 70s.
Into Tuesday, an area of low pressure to slide across Kentucky and that will bring in more widespread rain and storms. Locally heavy rain and a strong storm or two is possible with highs in the 70s.
More scattered thunderstorm chances will continue into mid to late week with the next best chance at widespread rain after Tuesday being on Friday! All in all, a general 1″-3″ of rain is likely over the next week. So with a saturated ground and waterways running high, a local high water issue is possible next week.
Temperatures will run near to just slightly above normal through mid month as well. For perspective, our average high for this time of the year is 75.
As always, stay up to date through it all on-air and online with your ABC 36 Storm Team! #kywx
