Fayette County reports seven new deaths in latest COVID report.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Seven new deaths and a continuing rise in new cases shows that COVID-19 is still present in Fayette County.

According to the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department’s Monday report, the county recorded 91 new COVID cases Friday which followed 183 new cases last Saturday through last Monday, 87 cases Thursday and 88 cases last Wednesday. The seven-day moving average stayed at 72 compared to Tuesday, but was still up from 67 Friday, 68 Thursday, 66 last  Wednesday, 65 last Tuesday and 69 last Monday.

The total number of cases recorded in the county now stands at 52,307.

The county also reported two new deaths, raising the number of county residents lost to COVID-related causes to 446. Two of the deaths were from September, three were from October and two were in November.

Being fully vaccinated makes people less likely to catch COVID-19, and if they do end up getting it, it makes them far less likely to have severe symptoms requiring hospitalization.

Both vaccinated and unvaccinated populations can help slow the outbreak by:
• Wearing a face covering in crowded public areas
• Avoiding close contact with people who are sick, especially those with COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, muscle/body aches, loss of taste/smell, nausea, etc.);
• Covering coughs and sneezes;
• Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth;
• Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

While there’s still a chance a fully vaccinated person can get COVID-19, symptoms will likely be less severe and the need for hospitalization is much smaller. Since February 2021, about 88% of Lexington’s COVID-19-related hospitalizations are in people who are unvaccinated or aren’t fully vaccinated.
