Lawsuit against libraries ends, tax rate method stays
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – In a victory for libraries across Kentucky, it appears that the method by which the libraries set their tax rates will stand.
The Kentucky Enquirer (http://cin.ci/1NlwMUB ) reports that the Kentucky Supreme Court announced Friday that it had decided not to hear arguments in the 2012 lawsuit objecting to the way Campbell and Kenton county libraries set their tax rates.
The lawsuit had said that libraries have improperly raised taxes for more than 30 years. Campbell and Kenton county circuit judges agreed with the plaintiffs in 2013, but the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled on March 19 that the libraries acted in good faith in determining annual tax rates.
Campbell County Library Board President Cathy Howard praised the decision, saying libraries are important for communities and have been accountable to taxpayers.
