TRAFFIC ALERT: Alumni Drive closes for reconstruction
It’s one of the most heavily traveled “cut-through” roads in Lexington and the university wants to do something with the constant traffic backups, but the fix includes some traffic headaches.
The construction between Nicholasville Road and Tates Creeks Road will only last a few months, but the university says, it will be worth the wait.
The entire road will be straightened out and widened to allow for one lane in each direction with a median. There will also be a bike lane added in each direction.
To cut back on traffic, two stop sign intersections will also be replaced with roundabouts.
Access to the arboretum will stay open, but it will only be accessible from the Tates Creek Side.
The University has put together a fact sheet on the construction and the detours to different university facilities. Take a look here.
Bicyclists who travel back and forth to campus using the Arboretum path will have to use the following route: Glendover Road to Valley Road to Shady Lane to McDonald Avenue to University Court via the pedestrian bridge behind Baptist Health. A temporary access road will allow bicyclists to cross Alumni Drive at University Court.
Alumni Drive will remain closed until August 17th.
