After record COVID cases, Fayette starts month with one of lowest Mondays in weeks

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – After setting a single-month record for new cases in January, Fayette County started February with one of the lowest new case totals on a Monday in weeks.

But health officials aren’t celebrating yet, knowing a variety of factors could have caused the low report.

Lexington reported 130 new COVID-19 cases Monday, bringing the total to 29,679 cases since the outbreak began in March 2020, according to the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department’s morning report Tuesday.

The county recorded one additional death, bringing to 196 the number of people lost to coronavirus-related causes.

The 130 new cases followed a record number in January. In fact, 62% of the city’s total cases have come since Nov. 1.

The monthly totals of COVID-19 cases during the outbreak are:

• 793, June
• 1,702, July
• 2,538, August
• 2,804, September
• 2,736, October
• 6,070, November
• 5,991, December
• 6,155, January
