Clouds and cool air Thursday before storm threat increases Friday

Cloudy and cool conditions linger Thursday

The stalled cold front that brought rain earlier in the week has now slipped south of Kentucky, helping quieter weather settle into much of the Bluegrass for Thursday.

Rainfall fizzles out through the late morning. Clouds will hang around for much of the day, especially across central and eastern Kentucky, with a few lingering showers possible closer to the Tennessee border. Most communities farther north should stay dry through the afternoon.

Temperatures will run much cooler than normal for late May, with many spots struggling to climb out of the 60s under the thick cloud cover. A few areas may barely reach 70 degrees by late afternoon if sunshine breaks through.

Storm chances ramp back up Friday

The weather pattern quickly turns more active again Friday as the stalled front lifts back north as a warm front. Showers become more widespread Friday morning before thunderstorms develop later in the day.

By Friday afternoon and evening, parts of the Bluegrass could see stronger storms develop as warmer and more humid air pushes back into the region. While uncertainty remains over how much instability develops, conditions may become favorable for organized storms capable of damaging winds and an isolated tornado.

The greatest storm threat will depend heavily on how much sunshine breaks through during the day, but Friday currently carries the highest severe weather potential of the upcoming holiday weekend.

Temperatures rebound into the mid and upper 70s Friday, with muggy conditions returning as well.

Unsettled Memorial Day weekend ahead

The active weather pattern sticks around through Memorial Day weekend and into next week, bringing several more opportunities for showers and thunderstorms.

Saturday may feature scattered storms early before rain chances gradually decrease later in the day. Sunday looks more active again as another round of showers and storms develops across Kentucky.

None of the weekend appears to be a total washout, but periods of rain and thunderstorms will remain possible each day. Some heavier downpours could also develop at times as deep moisture stays locked over the Ohio Valley.

Temperatures through the weekend stay fairly mild, generally topping out in the 70s with muggy nights in the 60s.
