Stormy Wednesday ahead of wetter holiday weekend settles in
Rounds of rain and storms continue Wednesday
The morning starts off damp across parts of the region as waves of showers and thunderstorms move through central and eastern Kentucky. Some heavier rain may lead to localized high water issues, especially in areas that picked up rain over the last couple of days.
As the cold front pushes east through the afternoon, another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop across the Bluegrass and eastern Kentucky. A few storms could become strong during the afternoon and evening hours, especially toward the I-75 corridor.
The main concerns with any stronger storms will be gusty winds, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning. Severe weather is expected to remain fairly isolated, but a few storms could briefly become intense before weakening later tonight.
Temperatures will vary depending on rain coverage, with upper 70s and lower 80s likely across eastern Kentucky while cooler air settles farther west.
Brief break arrives Thursday
Rain chances decrease noticeably Thursday as the cold front slips south of the region for a short time. Much of the Bluegrass should see a quieter day with a mix of clouds and sunshine along with cooler temperatures.
Afternoon highs will mainly stay in the 70s, making it feel much more comfortable compared to the recent stretch of summer-like heat.
By Thursday night, though, the stalled front begins lifting back north and showers start returning from the south ahead of the holiday weekend.
Memorial Day weekend turns unsettled again
An active weather pattern settles back in for Memorial Day weekend with multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected from Friday through early next week.
This will not be a nonstop washout, but there will be repeated opportunities for rain and storms each day. Some storms could produce heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and lightning, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
Temperatures through the holiday weekend stay warm and humid, with highs mainly in the lower 80s and overnight lows staying in the 60s.
The repeated rainfall could become heavy at times, especially where storms move over the same areas. Some locations may pick up several inches of rain through early next week, although the rain will also help ease the recent dry conditions across Kentucky.
