Spring-like Friday with a hot and stormy weekend ahead

Cool nights give way to warmer afternoons

Quiet weather continues into Friday as high pressure keeps conditions mostly dry and comfortable.

The day begins with another cool start, with temperatures dipping into the 40s overnight under mainly clear skies and light winds. By Friday afternoon, warmer air begins returning to the Ohio Valley as winds shift out of the south.

A weak disturbance could trigger a few isolated showers or a rumble of thunder, mainly across northern Kentucky and southern Indiana. Most areas will stay dry, but a brief shower cannot be ruled out.

Temperatures climb into the mid and upper 70s by afternoon, giving the region a much warmer feel heading into the weekend.

Storm chances return Saturday

Saturday brings a more unsettled setup as humidity increases and a warm front lifts north through the region.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected at times through the day, and a few storms could become strong, especially across areas near and north of Interstate 64.

The overall severe weather threat still looks fairly limited, but any stronger storms may produce gusty winds and some hail. There is still some uncertainty surrounding how widespread storms become, especially depending on how much cloud cover lingers into the afternoon.

Even with the storm chances, temperatures still surge into the mid and upper 80s across much of Kentucky.

Summer heat takes over Sunday into next week

Once Saturday’s storms move out, the heat really builds in.

Sunday through Tuesday is expected to feature the first extended stretch of summerlike weather of the season, with highs climbing close to 90 degrees in many locations. A few spots could even rise into the lower 90s, especially by Monday afternoon.

Humidity levels also increase, making it feel noticeably stickier outside compared to the recent stretch of cool spring weather.

Some communities could come close to record highs early next week as warm air remains firmly locked across the Ohio Valley.

More storms possible by the middle of next week

Another weather system is expected to approach from the west by Tuesday, bringing renewed chances for showers and thunderstorms into the middle of the week.

Forecast confidence on timing is still somewhat low, but periods of rain and storms appear increasingly likely as a cold front moves toward Kentucky.

Temperatures may cool slightly by the second half of next week, though conditions are still expected to remain warm overall.
