Sunshine returns to Kentucky before another round of midweek rain

Dry and pleasant weather continues Tuesday before scattered showers move back into the forecast Tuesday night into Wednesday

Morning Showers Bring Much-Needed Rainfall

Central and Eastern Kentucky started off on a soggy note Monday morning as scattered showers moved through the region, bringing much-needed rainfall to many areas. Rain totals ranged anywhere from just a trace up to around four-tenths of an inch across portions of the viewing area.

The good news is that all of that rain has now moved out of the area, leaving behind improving conditions and sunshine for the afternoon hours.

Sunshine and Warmer Temperatures Return This Afternoon

After a cloudy and damp start to the day, skies are quickly clearing across Kentucky this afternoon. Some areas are still holding onto a few clouds, but overall, sunshine has returned for much of the region.

Temperatures are responding nicely as well, climbing back into the low 70s this afternoon with comfortable conditions expected through the evening hours. High pressure building into the Ohio Valley is helping keep conditions quiet and pleasant through tonight.

Tonight will be cool once again with overnight lows dropping back into the upper 40s across much of the area under mostly clear skies.

Another Beautiful Day Tuesday Before Rain Returns Overnight

Tuesday is shaping up to be another great spring day across Central and Eastern Kentucky.

We’ll start the morning off cool with temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s, but sunshine and developing southwest winds will help temperatures quickly warm into the mid to upper 70s by the afternoon hours.

Skies will stay mostly sunny through much of the day, making for another beautiful afternoon outdoors.

By Tuesday night, however, clouds will begin increasing ahead of our next weather system moving in from the northwest.

Scattered Showers Return Late Tuesday Night Into Wednesday

A cold front associated with a low pressure system over the Great Lakes will move into the Ohio Valley late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, bringing another round of scattered showers to the area.

Rain is expected to begin moving into  northern Kentucky between roughly 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday before gradually spreading southeast through the morning hours.

This system is not expected to produce a lot of rainfall because dry air near the surface will limit precipitation totals. Most locations are expected to stay under a quarter inch of rainfall.

Some showers could linger into Wednesday afternoon, especially across eastern Kentucky and the Bluegrass region. There is even a slight chance for an isolated thunderstorm if the front slows down enough during the afternoon hours, although confidence in thunderstorm development remains fairly low at this time.

Afternoon highs Wednesday will still warm back into the mid to upper 70s before cooler air filters in behind the front Wednesday night.

Cooler But Pleasant Weather Returns Late Week

Once Wednesday’s front moves through, cooler and drier weather returns for Thursday.

Temperatures will cool back into the upper 60s Thursday afternoon, but sunshine and dry conditions will make for another pleasant spring day across the area. Friday looks very similar, although temperatures will begin warming back into the mid to upper 70s with plenty of sunshine continuing.

Summer-Like Heat Builds In This Weekend

Looking ahead to the weekend, Kentucky is set to experience another major warm-up.

A much warmer air mass will build into the region, pushing temperatures into the mid and even upper 80s by Sunday. Some locations could even approach 90 degrees by the end of the weekend.

With the warmer temperatures and just enough moisture in place, isolated showers and storms will be possible Saturday through Monday, although many locations will remain dry for extended periods.
