Chilly nights continue across Kentucky before rain returns for Mother’s Day weekend
Patchy frost possible again tonight before warmer temperatures and weekend shower chances move back into the area
Sunshine Returns, But Cooler Air Sticks Around
Central and Eastern Kentucky started off on a chilly note Thursday morning with temperatures falling into the 40s across much of the region. Despite the cool start, sunshine quickly returned and helped make for another beautiful spring day.
Even with all the sunshine, temperatures are still running below normal for early May thanks to continued northerly winds pulling cooler air into the region. Afternoon highs are only expected to climb back into the low 60s across much of the area today. Temperatures are running around 10 to 15 degrees below average for this time of year.
Frost Potential Returns Tonight
As we head into tonight, skies will remain mostly clear while winds become lighter as high pressure settles directly over the Ohio Valley. That setup will allow temperatures to drop quickly once again, with overnight lows falling into the upper 30s and low 40s.
Some of the colder valleys and eastern parts of the viewing area could even briefly dip into the mid 30s overnight. Because of that, patchy frost will once again be possible late tonight into early Friday morning, especially closer to the I-75 corridor.
If you have any sensitive plants outdoors, tonight would be a good night to either bring them inside or cover them up before heading to bed.
Warmer Temperatures Return Friday
Friday morning will start off chilly once again, but temperatures will recover much better during the afternoon as winds begin shifting back out of the south.
We’ll continue to see plenty of sunshine through much of the day, with highs warming back into the upper 60s and lower 70s by Friday afternoon. Overall, Friday looks like another great day to spend time outside before rain chances return for the weekend.
Mother’s Day Weekend Brings More Rain Chances
Our next weather maker arrives Friday night into early Saturday morning as another disturbance pushes showers into the region.
Scattered showers and perhaps a rumble of thunder will be possible overnight Friday into Saturday morning, especially across north-central Kentucky. The good news is that much of the rain should move out by Saturday afternoon, allowing conditions to dry out for the second half of the day with temperatures warming into the low to mid 70s.
Mother’s Day Sunday is expected to start off mainly dry with some sunshine early in the day. However, another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop later Sunday afternoon and continue into Sunday night as another system moves through the Ohio Valley.
Cooler and Drier Weather Returns Next Week
Behind Sunday’s system, cooler and drier air will move back into the region to start next week. High temperatures Monday will likely remain in the upper 60s and low 70s before temperatures gradually warm back closer to normal by the middle of next week.
