Cool start gives way to a chilly derby weekend
Chilly start with a breezy, cooler afternoon
It’s a cold start across the region, with many locations in the low 40s and a few spots dipping into the upper 30s. A band of light showers is trying to move in from the west, but most of it is falling apart before reaching the ground due to dry air. A few sprinkles are possible north of I-64, but most areas stay dry.
As the day goes on, a cold front pushes through, shifting winds out of the northwest and bringing a steady breeze. Highs only reach the 60s, making for a noticeably cooler feel compared to recent days.
Cold night followed by a cool Derby Day
Temperatures drop quickly overnight into the upper 30s and low 40s, with some patchy frost possible in colder spots.
Saturday stays mostly dry, but much cooler than typical early May. Highs only reach the upper 50s to low 60s, running well below normal. A few isolated showers can’t be ruled out, mainly to the west, but most of the day remains quiet.
For those heading to the Kentucky Derby, conditions look dry overall, but definitely cooler than usual. It won’t have that classic warm Derby feel, so bringing a jacket or layers will be a good idea.
Frost risk Sunday before a warmer, more active pattern returns
Skies clear Saturday night, allowing temperatures to fall into the 30s. That increases the chance for frost, especially east of I-65 and across the Bluegrass. Sunday stays dry with highs in the mid 60s.
Looking ahead, temperatures begin to rebound into the 70s by Monday, with rain chances returning. A more active setup is expected by Tuesday, when showers and storms could become more widespread.
