Warm and calm Friday, with big changes coming this weekend
Friday stays warm with a small storm chance northwest
Friday morning starts with a mix of clearing skies and leftover clouds across eastern Kentucky, thanks to a departing disturbance from earlier storms. Temperatures vary a bit early on, ranging from the 50s in clearer areas to the low 60s where clouds linger.
As the day goes on, sunshine returns for most of the Bluegrass, with a few high clouds mixing in. A steady southwest breeze picks up again, with gusts reaching 20 to 25 mph through the afternoon.
Temperatures climb right back into the low to mid 80s, continuing the stretch of well above normal warmth. Most areas stay dry, but there is a small chance for a few isolated storms to develop mainly to the northwest of the region. If any of those storms hold together, they could bring brief heavy rain, gusty winds, and possibly some small hail.
Mild Friday night with showers approaching late
Friday night stays mild and breezy early, with temperatures only dropping into the mid to upper 60s. Winds ease a bit after sunset, but the air remains warm.
Later in the night, showers and a few storms begin to approach from the northwest as a larger system organizes across the Midwest. Most of central and eastern Kentucky will stay dry through much of the night, but rain chances begin to increase toward daybreak Saturday.
Saturday brings widespread rain and storms
Saturday is shaping up to be the most active day in this forecast. A cold front moves into the region, bringing widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms through the day.
Cloud cover and ongoing rain will likely limit how unstable the atmosphere becomes, but there is still enough energy for a few stronger storms, especially across the Bluegrass and into eastern Kentucky later in the day. Gusty winds and heavy rainfall look to be the main concerns.
A few isolated morning showers could pop up, but the main chance for widespread storms is in the mid-afternoon through the evening. This will impact outdoor plans.
Temperatures start the day on the warm side, generally in the 70s, and some eastern areas could briefly push near 80 before the front arrives.
Big temperature drop Saturday evening
Once the cold front moves through, conditions change quickly. Winds shift to the northwest and remain gusty, pulling in much cooler air.
Temperatures will fall sharply Saturday evening, dropping from the 70s into the 50s and eventually into the 40s overnight. Rain showers may linger into the evening before gradually ending.
Cooler air settles in with frost potential
Sunday brings a completely different feel, with highs only reaching the upper 50s in the Bluegrass and low 60s farther west. Skies turn partly to mostly sunny, but the cooler air sticks around.
By Sunday night, clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall into the 30s across central and eastern Kentucky. That setup could lead to areas of frost, especially in the Bluegrass and other sheltered locations.
