A frosty start to the day gives way to a big warm up

Freezing start in the Bluegrass Wednesday morning

It felt extra chilly heading out the door on Wednesday morning. Temperatures have dropped into the 30s, and in some spots across the Bluegrass, they’ve briefly slipped below freezing around sunrise.

The coldest temperatures tend to show up in those low-lying and sheltered areas, especially along and east of the Kentucky River. With clear skies overnight, it was the perfect setup for frost, and even a light freeze in a few places. Definitely a morning to keep those sensitive plants covered.

The good news is that we bounce back quickly today. After a cold start, temperatures will warm nicely into the upper 60s and low 70s this afternoon.

You’ll notice more clouds drifting in as the day goes on, but they won’t bring any rain. The air near the ground is still very dry, so we stay completely dry despite a few passing clouds overhead. Overall, it turns into a pretty pleasant afternoon.

A much less chilly night tonight

Tonight won’t have that same bite in the air. A light breeze will keep things from cooling off too much, with temperatures only dropping into the mid-40s to low 50s. A few of the colder valleys could still dip into the upper 30s or low 40s, but for most of us, the frost threat is finally behind us.

By Thursday, it really starts to feel like spring again. Sunshine returns, and temperatures climb into the mid to upper 70s.

This warmer pattern sticks around thanks to a steady southwest breeze bringing in milder air. It’s the kind of weather that makes it easy to spend time outside.

A small chance for showers late Friday

Looking ahead to Friday, we’ll keep an eye on a weak front trying to move into the region. This could bring a chance for a few showers, mainly later in the day and into the evening. Right now, the chance isn’t all that high, and many places may not see any rain at all. If something does pop up, it would likely be brief. There’s also a small chance for a thunderstorm, but nothing too concerning at this point.

That front may linger nearby into Saturday, so we can’t completely rule out a stray shower. Still, most of the weekend looks dry.

Temperatures stay on the warm side, and by Sunday, we could be talking about highs in the 80s. Not bad for early April, especially considering where we started the week.

Looking ahead to next week

The warm pattern may continue into early next week, but it does look like we’ll eventually turn more active.

There are signs that more widespread showers and thunderstorms could develop by the middle of next week, though the exact timing is still up in the air.
