Weather whiplash as temps quickly drop ahead of the weekend
Warm Start Friday, Then a Quick Cool-Down
Friday early morning began on a surprisingly warm note, with temperatures in the low 70s across the Bluegrass. It felt more like late April than late March early on, but that warmth has already begun to leave.
A weakening line of showers and a few thunderstorms is moving into the region during the morning hours. While most spots just see light rain, a quick rumble of thunder or a brief gust of wind can’t be ruled out, especially early on. The good news is that this line is losing strength as it moves in, so severe weather isn’t a concern.
Behind it, though, is where the real change happens. Winds shift around to the north, and you can feel the difference almost immediately. Instead of warming up through the day, temperatures actually fall, sliding from the 70s in the morning down into the 50s by the afternoon. It’s the kind of day where what you wear early won’t match how it feels later.
Showers Fade, But a Freeze Takes Their Place
As the day goes on, showers become more scattered and eventually fade out altogether by late afternoon, leaving behind clearing skies and a much cooler air mass settling in.
That sets the stage for a cold night. With skies clearing and winds calming down, temperatures drop quickly after sunset. By early Saturday morning, much of the region is expected to fall into the upper 20s to around 30 degrees.
A Freeze Warning is in effect, and this is one of those nights where it matters, especially since the growing season has already started. Any early blooms or sensitive plants could take a hit if left unprotected.
Quiet but Cool to Start the Weekend
Saturday brings a calmer and brighter stretch of weather. Sunshine returns, and while it looks nice outside, it still feels a bit cool for this time of year. Afternoon highs top out in the 50s, and the air has that crisp, early-spring feel.
Another chilly start is possible heading into Sunday morning, especially in the typically colder valleys of eastern Kentucky, where temperatures can still flirt with freezing.
Springlike Warmth Comes Roaring Back
If you’re not a fan of the cold snap, don’t worry, it doesn’t last long. A steady warm-up kicks in as winds turn back out of the south, pulling milder air into the region.
Temperatures climb back into the 60s and then jump into the 70s and low 80s by the end of next week. It’s a quick rebound that brings back that spring (and even early summer) feel.
More Active Pattern Ahead
With the warmer air also comes a return to a more unsettled pattern. There will be periodic chances for showers and thunderstorms as we head into next week, especially during the afternoons and evenings.
It won’t be a washout, but it’s a reminder that this time of year is all about change!
