Summer-like warmth ahead of a sharp cool-down

Mild Morning With Spotty Showers

Early Thursday morning hours start unusually mild, with temperatures holding in the 60s across much of the area. A few scattered showers and even an isolated rumble of thunder are possible, mainly across southern Indiana and northern Kentucky.

Most of this activity will be light and short-lived, with many locations staying dry as clouds begin to break.

Gusty Winds and Near-Record Warmth

As skies clear, the main story quickly becomes the warmth and wind. Strong southwest winds will pick up, with gusts between 25 and 35 mph and a few higher gusts possible.

These winds will push temperatures into the low to mid-80s by the afternoon, putting some areas close to record highs for late March. The combination of warmth and wind will make it feel more like early summer than spring.

Rain Moves In, Temperatures Drop Fast

The warm spell comes to an abrupt end as a cold front sweeps through Friday morning. Showers and a few thunderstorms will develop along and behind the front, especially during the early morning hours.

Rainfall amounts look fairly light overall, but the bigger change will be the drop in temperature. Temperatures will fall steadily through the day, slipping from the 70s early to the 50s by the afternoon as cooler air moves in.

Frost Possible After a Cold Night

By late night, much colder air settles into the region. Temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 20s and low 30s by Saturday morning, creating conditions favorable for widespread frost.

This could pose a concern for early spring vegetation, as the growing season has already begun.

Quiet Weekend, Then Warmer Again

The weekend brings a return to sunshine and calmer weather. Saturday will be cool but pleasant, with highs in the 50s under clear skies.

Temperatures begin to rebound on Sunday, climbing into the upper 60s with continued dry conditions.

Unsettled Pattern Returns Next Week

Looking ahead, a warmer and more active pattern sets up. Highs return to the 70s and possibly low 80s, with periodic chances for showers and thunderstorms.

Rain chances won’t be constant, but scattered afternoon and evening storms will be possible on several days as spring continues to take hold.
