Gusty conditions end the work week ahead of a mild weekend

Gusty winds across the Bluegrass

Strong winds will sweep across the Bluegrass region as a powerful low pressure system moves through the Great Lakes.

Southwest winds will increase through the morning and afternoon, with gusts reaching 40 to 45 mph across parts of northern Kentucky and southern Indiana. In a few spots, especially in higher terrain, isolated gusts near 50 mph are possible. Farther south, winds will still be breezy with gusts generally between 30 and 40 mph.

Because of this, much of the Bluegrass will be under a Wind Advisory through 8 pm Monday. Use caution while driving and keep an eye on outdoor furniture.

Milder temperatures before cooler air returns

Temperatures will climb into the low to mid 60s across much of central Kentucky. Later in the evening, a weak cold front will slide south through the region, shifting winds to the west and northwest.

Skies will remain mostly clear overnight with temperatures dropping into the 30s and lower 40s.

High pressure will bring calm and dry weather heading into Saturday. Temperatures will vary across the region depending on the position of a stalled front, with highs ranging from around 60 degrees in northern areas to near 70 degrees across southern Kentucky.

Milder air will continue Saturday night as southerly winds return.

Strong system to watch late in the weekend

Attention then turns to a stronger storm system expected to move toward the Ohio Valley late in the weekend.

Temperatures may surge into the 70s on Sunday ahead of the approaching cold front. By Sunday evening and overnight, a line of showers and thunderstorms is expected to move through the region.

Some storms could produce damaging wind gusts. Behind the front, temperatures will drop sharply with much colder air arriving to start the new week. This cold air even looks to spark a few snow showers early Monday, though any falling snow is not expected to stick or cause impacts.
