New TSA “Confirm ID” option rolls out for travelers without proper identification

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A new identity verification option is now in place at airports, aimed at helping travelers who don’t have a Real ID or passport — but officials say it shouldn’t be seen as a long-term fix.

The Transportation Security Administration recently launched what’s being called the TSA Confirm ID, and it’s already causing some confusion among travelers trying to sort out the difference between Real ID, TSA PreCheck and this new temporary option.

Travel experts say many people are asking whether they now need another form of identification to fly.

Since taking effect Sunday, the Confirm ID is designed for travelers who show up at the airport without proper identification. According to AAA, the Confirm ID costs $45 and is only valid for a short period — roughly 10 days.

The ID can be purchased online through the TSA website or at the airport.

However, officials stress that having a Confirm ID does not automatically guarantee you’ll be allowed to fly. Additional identity verification is required, which can take anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes — and in some cases longer than 30 minutes.

Travel experts say the Confirm ID is meant to be a temporary solution, not a replacement for a Real ID or passport. Travelers are strongly encouraged to secure proper identification ahead of future trips to avoid delays or possible denial of boarding.
