A cold but sunny Thanksgiving before a weekend weather shakeup
Cold sunshine continues before a weekend system brings the chance for rain, snow, or a wintry mix.
Chilly Thanksgiving With Sunshine and Gusty Winds
Thanksgiving Day delivered beautiful sunshine across Central and Eastern Kentucky, but it certainly didn’t feel warm. Afternoon highs only made it into the upper 30s for many of us, and with breezy northwest winds gusting near 20 mph at times, wind chills were stuck in the 20s for most of the day.
Clouds that developed early in the day across northern Kentucky gradually shifted east, allowing the sunshine to take over for the afternoon. By sunset, winds began to weaken, setting the stage for another very cold night.
Another Frigid Night Ahead for Black Friday Shoppers
If you’re heading out early for Black Friday deals, you’re going to want all the winter gear again. Overnight lows will fall into the low 20s, and some areas may dip into the upper teens. Even with lighter winds, wind chills will still be in the mid-to-upper teens early Friday morning.
Friday stays quiet with mostly sunny skies, but temperatures remain below normal. Highs will climb into the upper 30s to low 40s—still cold, but with lighter winds than we saw on Thanksgiving.
Dry Weather Holds Through Friday Before Changes Arrive
High pressure slides east Friday night, keeping skies mostly clear but allowing another cold night. Most of the region will drop back into the low 20s. Clouds will begin increasing from the west late at night as our next weather-maker approaches.
Weekend System Brings Rain, Snow, or a Mix
A more active stretch of weather arrives Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. As moisture pushes in from the west Saturday, here in the Bluegrass, temperatures look marginal enough that most of us will likely see mainly rain, though a few wet snowflakes or a quick mix certainly aren’t out of the question—especially at the onset of precipitation Saturday afternoon or evening.
Warmer air moves in Saturday night, pushing most areas firmly into the “rain” category. Rain continues into early Sunday morning before tapering off as colder air returns. Impacts look minimal, thanks to borderline temperatures and warm ground surfaces.
Colder Air Returns Early Next Week
Behind Sunday’s system, temperatures dip back into the low to mid-20s by Monday morning. Monday remains dry but cold before another potential wintry system arrives Monday night into Tuesday. Early signs suggest Kentucky may have a better shot at accumulating snow with this one—but confidence is still low at this distance.
We’ll keep an eye on the setup over the next several days.
