Blustery Sunday brings big weather changes across Central and Eastern Kentucky
Wind, rain, and a blast of cooler air move in as a strong cold front pushes through the Bluegrass.
Wind, rain, and a taste of fall return as a strong cold front sweeps through the region
It was a noisy and windy start to Sunday across central and eastern Kentucky as a powerful cold front made its way through the region. This front brought heavy rain, a few strong storms, and some very gusty winds during the morning hours. Many across the area likely woke up to those howling winds, some gusts topped 40 miles per hour as the line of storms pushed through.
Lingering Showers and Falling Temperatures
By Sunday afternoon, most of the steady rain has moved out, but clouds and spotty light showers lingered behind the front. The cooler air filtering in has kept temperatures dropping through the day. After morning highs in the low 70s, many spots were sitting in the low to mid-50s by the afternoon — and it’ll only get colder tonight.
Behind the front, those gusty winds have continued, occasionally topping 30 mph as the atmosphere mixes down stronger winds from above. Once skies clear out this evening, temperatures will tumble into the upper 30s and low 40s overnight. Some patchy frost is possible early Monday morning, especially in sheltered or low-lying areas.
A Brighter, Milder Monday Ahead
After a chilly start to the new workweek, sunshine returns in full force for Monday. Highs will climb into the mid to upper 60s, making for a pleasant fall day across the Bluegrass. Winds will be much lighter, and it’ll feel noticeably calmer compared to Sunday’s blustery weather.
Another weak cold front looks to swing through on Tuesday, but this one will be mostly dry — just reinforcing the cooler, fall-like pattern we’ll hold onto through much of the week.
