Sunny and Warm Finish to September with Eyes on the Tropics

Warm and Sunny Weekend with Tropical Systems on the Horizon

Friday Wrap-Up: Perfect Start to the Weekend

Friday brought a beautiful day across the area with plenty of sunshine and only a few clouds drifting by. Highs climbed into the upper 70s and low 80s, and the air felt drier thanks to lower dewpoints moving in. Friday night football will be very comfortable with kickoff temperatures in the low 70s, and by the time the game wraps up, you’ll be heading home in the low to mid 60s under mostly clear skies.

Weekend Outlook: More Sunshine and Warm Temps

The final weekend of September looks pleasant for most of the viewing area. High pressure to our west is helping keep skies mostly sunny and conditions dry. Afternoon highs will stay around 80 degrees, with slightly cooler spots in the southeastern mountains where a few scattered clouds or a pop-up shower is possible.

Watching the Tropics: Potential Impacts Next Week

While the current forecast is dry and warm, the tropics are starting to get busy. Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 could develop into a tropical storm by the end of the weekend and possibly a hurricane early next week. This system is expected to move northward through the Bahamas toward the Carolinas. Hurricane Humberto, farther east, could interact with this system through the Fujiwhara Effect, complicating the forecast. This is a phenomenon where the two systems begin to rotate around a common center, or one system can absorb the other since they aren’t that far apart. This possibility makes it extremely difficult to forecast the eventual path(s) and impacts so this will be something to watch. For now, we expect highs in the low 80s with mostly dry conditions, but tropical moisture could increase rain chances later in the week if the system drifts closer.
