Case against man accused of setting Franklin County fire that killed sons sent to grand jury
FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — A judge has ruled there is enough evidence to send the case against a Franklin County man accused of setting a deadly house fire to a grand jury.
Dustin Fields, 44, appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing. Judge Chris Olds waived the case to the Franklin County Grand Jury and maintained Fields’ bond at $2 million.
Fields is charged with first-degree arson after investigators say he intentionally set a fire at his home on Flat Creek Road in the early morning hours of April 30. His two teenage sons—13-year-old Bently Fields and 15-year-old Rylan Fields—died in the fire.
As previously reported by ABC 36, Fields told the court during his arraignment that the property was his home and acknowledged that “it just recently went up in a ball of flames.” Investigators say an ATF K-9 detected accelerants on Fields’ shoes and inside the home.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky State Police, and State Fire Marshal’s Office continue to investigate. More charges could be filed as the case progresses.
