FEMA warning of possible scams
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — FEMA is alerting Kentuckians affected by recent flooding and severe weather to be on the lookout for scammers trying to take advantage of disaster recovery efforts.
According to FEMA, some criminals may try to file false claims using names, addresses, and Social Security numbers stolen from actual flood survivors. If you receive a letter from FEMA or are visited by an inspector — but never applied for assistance — you’re urged to contact FEMA to stop the fraudulent application.
Officials are also warning about people pretending to be FEMA housing inspectors. Legitimate FEMA inspectors will always carry a photo ID and will never ask for personal financial information.
If you suspect a scam or have been targeted, contact your local police or sheriff’s office immediately.
