Nice Monday ahead of off & on rain chances this week

Skies clear out and temperatures will return to the upper 50s and low 60s Monday afternoon

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – After Sunday night’s storms, improving conditions are expected as we start the workweek. Monday will feature clearing skies throughout the day, with temperatures climbing into the upper 50s and low 60s. A strong westerly breeze will help in the warming process, with gusts reaching 30-35 mph during the midday and afternoon hours. While dry weather dominates Monday, the quiet stretch won’t last long as rain chances return overnight.

A Week of Periodic Rain and Temperature Swings

Tuesday morning will start off damp, with light rain expected across southern Indiana and central Kentucky before gradually pushing eastward. While the bulk of the rain will move out by midday, clouds will linger, and temperatures will take a slight hit. Afternoon highs will top out in the mid-50s, several degrees below normal for late March. Another round of showers is expected to move in Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, with eastern Kentucky potentially seeing a few wet snowflakes mix in before precipitation exits. However, no accumulation is expected.

Wednesday will be the coolest day of the week, with highs struggling to get out of the low-to-mid 50s. A reinforcing shot of cooler air behind the departing system will make for a brisk day, with northwesterly winds adding a chill to the air. High pressure will begin to build in by Wednesday night, allowing for clearing skies and colder overnight temperatures. Lows could dip below freezing in sheltered valleys by Thursday morning, which could result in patchy frost.

Thursday marks a transition day, with mostly sunny skies and highs rebounding to the low 60s. A warm front lifting northward late Thursday into Friday will introduce another round of showers, but the bigger story will be the warming trend heading into the weekend. By Friday and Saturday, southerly flow will push temperatures back into the low 70s, bringing a taste of spring.

Stormy End to the Weekend?

The mild and unsettled pattern will continue into the weekend, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected Saturday. A more organized storm system is set to arrive Sunday into Sunday night, and the Storm Prediction Center is already highlighting a strong-to-severe storm risk for much of the region. While details remain uncertain, the setup suggests an active period of weather to close out the weekend, with the potential for damaging winds, heavy rain, and even isolated tornadoes. Those with outdoor plans Sunday should stay weather-aware as forecast details become clearer.
