LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Wednesday! FINALLY, some beneficial rain for most of central and eastern Kentucky. The late night rain and early morning rain has exited but we aren’t done yet. Another round of scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms is expected. This is ahead of the highly anticipated cold front that will bring us a very refreshing feel for the end of the week. However, muggy conditions will remain with us on Wednesday ahead of the front. Though, temperatures will take a hit. Afternoon highs will struggle to reach the mid-80s for most, expect for southern and southeastern Kentucky where we could still reach the upper 80s and near 90. Rainfall amounts will be scattered from the rain later today into the evening, with most areas receiving light amounts with isolated heavier downpours possible.
As the front passes overnight, pleasant conditions will settle in for the rest of the week. Afternoon highs on Thursday will struggle to reach the low 80s for most of the area. The big question with Thursday’s forecast will be the clouds. If it stays mostly cloudy all day, many areas may not even reach the low 80s. If we get some afternoon sunshine, that would allow temperatures to climb near the mid-80s. Regardless, it will be cooler and much less humid than that it has been. There may be a few lingering showers in southern Kentucky, but Lexington and surrounding areas should stay mainly dry.
Thursday night into Friday morning will be spectacular. Overnight lows will fall into the upper 50s and low 60s across the region. A few mid-50s may even be possible in the valleys. This is ahead of our “Go Day” of the week on Friday. Temperatures will only climb into the mid-80s and the humidity will remain comfortable. Another pleasant night is anticipated Friday night into Saturday.
Temperatures return to the mid-to-upper 80s this weekend with rain chances slowly returning as well. Rain chances will be limited to southern Kentucky on Saturday and will start to creep northward on Sunday. We are expecting a pattern shift to take place heading into next week. Southwesterly flow across the region will provide ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico to fuel daily rain chances. This is good news considering we need the rain for most areas. This could end up being too much rain for some though. We will be watching the potential for heavy rain by mid-to-late week.
