“It’s the fourth leading cause of death,”: Colon Cancer Awareness Month
Lexington, Ky. (WTVQ) — Baptist Health Lexington, along with six local churches, held a free colon cancer awareness and community screening health fair.
Baptist Health hosted the event in honor of Colon Cancer Awareness Month and their 100 days of Service efforts.
The event began at 1 p.m. at the Steam Academy on Georgetown Road.
The goal is to increase awareness of colon cancer and the need for screening, because it’s more important than people think.
“It’s the fourth leading cause of death in men and women nation wide,” said Lee Hicks, Medical Director of Medical Oncology. “It’s preventable with colon cancer screening, with colonoscopies, we can reduce the risk of death by early detection and relatively easy interventions. Certainly much more affective than waiting for the proverbial cat to get out of the bag so to speak. We do better by treating early and intervening before it spreads.”
Attendees could also learn about skin cancer prevention, breast cancer, CPR and get a free diabetes screening, plus so much more.
The event wrapped up at 4 p.m.
