One person dead in Rockcastle Co. shooting

Mount Vernon, Ky. (WTVQ) — Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting in Rockcastle County on Sunday morning that left one person dead.

According to KSP, around 9:50 Sunday morning, Troopers received a call from the Rockcastle County 911 Center for assistance with a shooting on Little Creek Rd.

The preliminary investigation revealed 48-year-old Joseph Dawson, was having a verbal altercation with his wife Katherine Dawson and Phillip Fox, a family member of Katherine’s.

Officials say Mr. Dawson was inside the residence and making threats to kill Mrs. Dawson and Fox, Mr. Dawson then exited the residence while armed with a kitchen knife and a machete knife.

Fox then retrieved a firearm and struck Mr. Dawson. Mr. Dawson then fled back to the porch.

According to KSP, Mr. Dawson was found on the porch fatally injured and was pronounced dead by the Rockcastle County Coroner.

The investigation is still ongoing.
