Chilly Thursday ahead of an active weekend and beyond

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

Happy Thursday everyone! It’s a seasonably chilly day across the region as several school districts head back to school after winter break. Temperatures will struggle to reach the upper 30s but there will be some afternoon sunshine. Tonight’s going to be a cold one, dipping into the low 20s for most with upper teens possible for some.

Now to what has the social media across the bluegrass buzzing, the weekend system.

What We Know

The forecast for the weekend is starting to come together. If you’re a winter-weather lover and hoping for a big snow maker, you’re likely going to be disappointed. This system isn’t going to produce major accumulations BUT that doesn’t mean we won’t see impacts across the region. Slushy conditions will be possible Saturday morning, especially in northern and northeastern Kentucky. That will be enough to cause some issues on roads and potentially lead to snow accumulation. Still too early to talk exact accumulation amounts because it’s going to be a close call between who see’s snow and who is left with rain or a rain/snow mix. Let’s time things out

Winter Threats

Latest trends show a precipitation moving in late Friday into Friday night. This will generally be lighter snow or a rain/snow mix. Precipitation rates will pick-up a bit by Saturday morning. With this there is the potential for a band of straight snow forming over the northern half of our viewing area. Futurecast illustrates this every well (See Below).

Saturday Am

This likely won’t last long into the day on Saturday and should exit by the afternoon. This leads to gradually warming temperatures into the upper 30s in many areas during the peak heating time of the day on Saturday. This should lead to improving road conditions in areas that experienced snowfall. Light rain or a rain/snow mix will be possible late Saturday night into Sunday as another wave of moisture pushes through the region. This isn’t going to be as heavy as the precipitation early Saturday. Isolated-to-scattered rain and/or rain/snow mix showers will be possible off and on throughout the day on Sunday.

Saturday Pm

We do get a bit of a break early on Monday before yes… Another system passing through the region. This next one will be stronger than the weekend but the main impacts are different. Heavy rain and gusty winds will be the primary concerns on Tuesday before cold air pushes in Tuesday night into Wednesday leading to light snow chances. Once again… we are still very early but there is a strong signal for heavy rain and gusty winds in excess of 40-45+ MPH. Stay with the ABC 36 Storm Team for more updates.
