UK Air Force ROTC run for veterans
Lexington, Ky. (WTVQ) — UK’s Air Force ROTC students ran from Lexington to Frankfort in honor of Veteran’s Day early Saturday morning.
The 29 mile run started at the UK Buell Armory around 6 a.m. and ended at The Kentucky Vietnam Memorial in Frankfort around noon.
Nearly 100 cadets and cadre participated in the run. Some arriving around 5:30 a.m. and get a warmup in.
Runners displayed US and POW and MIA flags on the journey.
Cadet Keith Brinkman, was in charge of the run and spoke about what this means to him.
“It’s awesome, we’re all excited for it,” said Brinkman. “It’s a Veteran’s Day, POW, MIA run. So this is obviously for prisoner of war, missing in action veteran and their families. And it’s just a way for us to say how thankful we are to them and that we’re still thinking of them.”
Mayor Linda Gorton was also present to speak with the runners before it started.
Mayor Gorton thanked those running, telling them not many would get up this early. And they are doing this for the country and to think about those they are running for during the journey.
The run ended with a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial to honor honor service members and their sacrifice.
