Maximus Call Center strike underway in London, Ky.
LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Hundreds of call center workers at Maximus, one of the federal government’s largest call center contractors, have started their strike.
One Maximus center located in London, Kentucky, is joining for one day only.
They’re asking for higher pay, more time off in between calls and clear policies that protect them from abusive calls.
This comes after workers across the country at Maximus Call Centers called for change last week when President Joe Biden’s Affordable Care Act took action, causing workers to see an increase in callers.
Our photojournalist Dylan Scheid was there and spoke to two of the Maximus Call Center workers about the changes they want to see.
“If we had a wage, like, 25 an hour, or something like that, or anything close to that, it would make a significant difference and I would be able to take care of my kids in a better way than what we’re stuck with right now,” said Devoree Peace.
“It’s a workers’ movement across the country. We definitely want to go and kind of unite and push other people to do their part to go ahead and take care of their jobs and their communities because if they don’t, no one else is going to,” Clinton Sams.
Thursday, the Communications Workers of America will host a national press conference at 2 p.m. in conjunction with the Nationwide Day of Strikes to call on the Biden administration to back up its commitment to “good jobs” with concrete action.
