School crossing guard who was struck on Polo Club Boulevard dies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — A school crossing guard who was struck by a car on Polo Club Boulevard near Garrett Morgan Elementary School on Tuesday has died.

James Holland was pronounced dead by the Fayette County coroner’s office on Wednesday. He was 73.

The coroner ruled Holland died of blunt force trauma and that his manner of death was an accident.

Lexington police held a news conference Thursday afternoon to talk about Holland. They say he had been with the department since April 2021.

At this time, no charges are expected. The Lexington Police Department says environmental conditions are believed to have led to the crash, not speeding, impairment or failure to follow traffic control devices.

“Mr. Holland was a beloved member of the Lexington Police Department family. He came to work every day with a smile on his face to ensure the safety of the youngest members of our community. We want to offer our condolences to his friends, family, and the students and staff of Garrett Morgan Elementary, whom he served daily. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him,” the police department said in a statement.

“James loved his job, his family, his coworkers and his kids at the school that he served daily, going to and from Garrett Morgan Elementary School twice a day to ensure that the students and staff were kept safe. James was a shining light and will be greatly missed,” said Lt. Chris Van Brackel.

Fayette County Public Schools shared a statement on social media calling Holland a “dedicated school crossing guard.”

Gov. Andy Beshear also shared his condolences on social media saying Holland “made a difference daily and will be missed.”

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. The family is asking for privacy during this time.
