Stolen Mustang leads police in half-hour chase

LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – After receiving a report for a stolen Ford Mustang on March 3, London police were led on a high-speed pursuit down KY 192.

KY Auto Mart in Corbin told police one of their cars had been stolen on Thursday, and Det. Sgt. Joe Smith noticed the stolen vehicle traveling west on KY-192 later that day. He attempted to stop it at Pier One Boat Rental, but the driver refused to stop – accellerating instead.

Sgt. Smith pursued the car, driven by 21 year old Laurel R. Simpson. Police say they reached speeds in excess of 80 mph, and Simpson’s reckless driving forced multiple vehicles off the roadway. They made a slight detour when Simpson turned onto London Dock Road, made a U-turn at the end of it and continued speeding east.

Police report simpson had nearly struck Officer Justin Roby and KSP Trooper Les Moses as Les Moses tried to deploy spike strips to end the pursuit.

A second spike strip was deployed, and after 28 minutes, the stolen vehicle was brought safely to a stop.

Laurel R. Simpson was arrested and charged with:

  • Fleeing and evading police
  • Wanton endangerment of a police officer
  • Wanton endangerment
  • Driving under the influence
  • Speeding 26 miles or greater than the speed limit.
  • Failure to maintain required insurance
  • Receiving stolen property under $10,000
