Alcohol, drugs suspected as 9-year-old girl dies in early-morning crash

MERCER COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A 9-year-old girl was killed early Wednesday morning when the car in which she was riding with five other people, including her mother, crashed on a rural road in Mercer County.

According to the Mercer County Sheriff Ernie Kelty , the accident happened at the intersection of Paradise Camp Road and Hughley Lane southeast of the Burgin community near the Dix River.

Kelty said a man and a woman and four children — the woman is the mother of the children — were in the car and witnesses told first responders the man fled the scene.
A 9-year-old girl was dead at the scene, according to deputies.
At about 3 a.m., deputies located the man who fled earlier. He was taken to UK Medical Center for treatment.

Kelty said drugs or alcohol are suspected. The sheriff also said investigators are getting conflicting stories from the man and woman about who was driving.

Kelty said once the investigation is complete, evidence will be presented to the Commonwealth Attorney’s office for a decision of charges.

Deputy Paul Parks is leading the investigation with assistance from Sgt. Matt Swabey, Kelty, Captain Scott Elder, Mercer County Fire Department, Mercer County Coroner’s Office, Mercer County Constable’s Office and Mercer County EMS.
