Heartbroken older dog cries as family leaves with younger dog
SAN BERNARDINO, Ca. -The San Bernardino City Shelter says an aging cocker spaniel’s heart broke, when she saw her family claim a younger dog, and then leave her behind.
According to the shelter, the family had come to pick up both dogs on December 30, after they had been rounded up as strays. Instead of taking both of them, however, the shelter says they took their young Labrador retriever, and left “Cookie,” an aging cocker spaniel behind.
Workers at the shelter characterized the abandonment, which left the dog whimpering as she watched her family leave, as “stunning and hurtful,” with one employee saying, “Cookie is crying for her family. She watched as the family drove away and left her to die.”
The dog’s story caught the attention of animal lovers, who rallied around the cocker spaniel. A rescue group called “OC Small Paws So UT” was able to place Cookie with a foster mother, according to the website 3milliondogs.com.
The rescue group has also arranged for veterinary care for Cookie, who is estimated to be somewhere between 8 and 10 years old, and suffers from various medical conditions requiring treatment. The spaniel has already had one surgery for cancer, and is recovering well. Because of her medical conditions, OC Small Paws So UT says Cookie will remain in permanent foster care, as opposed to being adopted by another family.
