Sorority’s annual doll campaign wraps up
LEXINGTON, Ky (WTVQ) – The members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. are bringing Christmas to hundreds of children following this year’s annual doll campaign.
In 2014, the sorority collected 2,200 dolls and made a record donation to the Lexington Fire Department’s toy drive.
Over the last few weeks, members have been collecting African American minority dolls and action figures for children of all ages with a goal of beating last year’s 12-hundred donation. The women will make their delivery Monday to the Lexington Fire Department during the sorority’s “Buy Black Monday” event at Imani Baptist Church.
“We thought, why not allow the community one more chance to help us in this endeavor”, said sorority president, Bridgett Rice. “We expect about 250 people at our annual “Buy Black Monday” event and we’re asking those who come to bring a doll to donate to help with our campaign.”
The doll campaign began in 2004 in memory of Lt. Brenda Cowan, Lexington’s first female African-American firefighter who was killed in the line of duty in February 2004. Since that time the sorority has donated nearly 6000 dolls and action figures to the Lexington Fire Department’s toy drive.
“Buy Black Monday” runs from 6:00 to 9:00 pm Monday, December 7 at Imani Baptist Church, 1555 Georgetown Rd, Lexington, KY.
