Lexington student faces assault charges for fight with box cutter
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A young woman in Lexington is facing assault charges after she reportedly fought another girl at a high school football game. Frederick Douglass Principal Lester Diaz sent a letter home to families after the game Friday night against Bryan Station.
In the letter, he explains one ninth grader had a box cutter and another hurt her hand while trying to defend herself. Diaz says an ambulance took that student to the hospital.
His full letter:
Dear Frederick Douglass High School Families:
As the principal of Frederick Douglass High School, my number one priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. I am writing to make you aware of something that happened during the football game tonight because keeping the lines of communication open between home and school is so important.
During the game this evening, there was an altercation involving two of our ninth-graders. One of the students had a box cutter and when the other student tried to defend herself, she sustained an injury to her hand. Administrators from the visiting team were closest to the situation and immediately intervened to stop the incident. Fayette County Public Schools law enforcement officers onsite for the game also assisted.
The student who instigated the altercation has been charged with assault in the second degree and was taken into custody. She will face serious administrative consequences through the school district in addition to possible action from the court system. The other student was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
I want to assure you that we will not tolerate this type of behavior at Frederick Douglass High School and will take all steps to ensure that our campus is a safe place to learn and work.
Any time there is a health or safety issue on campus, we want you to have the facts directly from us. Thank you for the privilege of working with your children and for understanding that we take this matter very seriously. As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at 381-3780.
