Roker, others react to Bevin’s school closings criticism

Gov. Matt Bevin

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Today Show host and weatherman Al Roker had some strong words for Governor Matt Bevin.

“I just have to say, this nitwit governor in Kentucky saying ‘oh oh, we’re weak, we’re,’ these are kids who are going to be in sub zero wind chills. No. Cancel school,” said Roker.

Roker was responding to comments made by Governor Bevin on Terry Meiner’s 840 WHAS radio show.

“Now we cancel school for cold?” said Bevin.

“I mean, what happened to America. We’re getting soft Terry… It’s better to err on the side of safe, and I’m being only slightly factitious, but it does concern me a little bit that in America, on this and a number of any other fronts, we’re sending messages to our young people that if life is hard, you can curl up in the fetal position somewhere in a warm place and wait until it stops being hard and that just isn’t reality,” said Bevin.

Some agreed with Bevin. A woman who lives in Iowa said on WTVQ’s Facebook page that her state doesn’t cancel school unless it’s twenty below.

“You can just tell the truth and people get mad at you,” said another man.

“We are a nation of lazy, whiney whoosies,” said one comment.

Roker wasn’t done though.

“Stop it. Adults, if they want to be out there, that’s great, these are our children. I’m glad you’re not a teacher.”

Bevin’s primary opponent, Robert Goforth, supported the decision to close schools and called out his educational background, saying Bevin went to a $60,000 a year prep school.
