10 dead, 27 wounded after gunman wearing armor opens fire in Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) – Ten people are dead including the shooter after a gunman opened fire overnight in Dayton’s Oregon District 27 people have been injured.

Mayor Nan Whaley said during a press conference that police responded to the shooing in less than a minute. Authorities have not stated a possible motive for the shooting.

President Donald Trump, tweeting about tragedy, saying, “The FBI, local and state law enforcement are working together in El Paso and in Dayton, Ohio. Information is rapidly being accumulated in Dayton. Much has already be learned in El Paso. Law enforcement was very rapid in both instances. Updates will be given throughout the day!”


A Kettering Health Network spokesperson has confirmed to our newsroom that victims have been treated at four of their hospitals. They believe that the number is rising.

  • 14 people were taken to Miami Valley Hospital.
  • 9 were taken to Grandview.
  • 1 was taken to Kettering Medical Center.
  • 2 were taken to Raj Soin Medical Center.

Kettering Hospital tells us the victim taken to Kettering Medical Center is in serious condition. The two people taken to Soin Medical Center have been treated and released. Granview Medical Center said 3 of its patients are in serious condition, 3 are in fair condition and 3 have been discharged.

Police say the shooting began around 1 a.m. Sunday on East Fifth Street in the Oregon district of the city.


The shooter, who has not been identified, was killed by police outside of Ned Peppers Bar after firing multiple rounds using a long gun. Authorities say the suspect was wearing a bulletproof vest and had extra magazines.

Governor Mike DeWine issued a statement on the shooting on Twitter.

The FBI is on the scene and Dayton Police are still investigating the incident.
