1 convicted, 1 acquitted in 2012 death of Lexington student

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — One man has been found guilty of murder and another man acquitted in the 2012 death of a Lexington high school student

A Fayette County Circuit Court jury on Tuesday convicted 24-year-old Deionta Hayes of murder, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of theft of a handgun. The Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/1Sm27q6 ) said defense lawyer Brian Hewlett declined comment.

Hayes’ Cousin, 24-year-old Dominique Godfrey, was found not guilty on all counts of murder, assault and theft. His lawyer, Mike Bufkin, said he believed in Godfrey’s innocence from the start and is certain it is the right verdict.

The case involved the shooting death of 16-year-old Henry Clay sophomore Chaz Black.

The defense said Hayes shot in self-defense, but the prosecution asked jurors to reject that because Black was unarmed.
