$1.2 million gift will help Lexington build an amphitheater

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A gift is giving the city of Lexington a new place for concerts.

On Tuesday, Mayor Jim Gray and Picnic with the Pops Commission President Kip Cornett announced a $1.2 million donation that will be given to Town Branch Park for an amphitheater that will be able to hold up to 5,000 people and become a permanent home for Picnic With the Pops.

The funds come from money Picnic With The Pops has been collecting since the early 1980s.

“The proceeds from decades of food, and fun, and music will fund a new home for Picnic With the Pops,” Gray said. “Thousands of people who have enjoyed this favorite Lexington tradition will be making a contribution to a permanent home for it, an amphitheater downtown in Town Branch Park.”

Town Branch Park will be on a 10-acre site adjacent to the recently approved expansion of Rupp Arena and Lexington Center.

The amphitheater is expected to be completed in 2022.
