YMCA of Central Ky. celebrates 170 years of service

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — The YMCA of Central Kentucky is celebrating 170 years of service.

City officials were at the High Street YMCA in Lexington Thursday as the organization marked nearly 200 years of serving the community here in Kentucky.

The Y was founded in November of 1853.

Mayor Linda Gorton on Thursday proclaimed November as YMCA Month.

“The Y is all about building up people physically, mentally, together in groups, and it’s such a wonderful organization and what it does for people is really immeasurable,” said Gorton.

“We do a ton of programs all across the community, so it’s an honor to serve the community and one of the things we wanted to do with the celebration was really thank the community for supporting us for 170 years,” Paula Anderson.

The Y said if you have stories and memories about the organization you can share them on social media using #YMCA.
