It’s a common practice for pet owners to pause flea and tick prevention during the winter months, but is it a good idea? Most veterinarians recommend year-round parasite prevention, and in Kentucky’s climate, it’s needed. Fleas are only killed off after 5 consecutive days of temperatures at or below freezing; ticks are not killed during cold weather but simply go dormant, and become active again anytime the temperature rises to 45 degrees. In mild winters like the one we’re having, it’s entirely possible that we will never hit that 5-days-below-freezing threshold.
