Woodford County Storm Cleanup

(Versailles, KY)

People in Woodford County continue to clean up after Friday’s strong storms.   ABC 36’s Alycia Dahmer takes us to Woodford County.

Piles of brush, limbs and blown over trees can be found up and down Oak Street in Versailles.  Freda Smith went to get the mail yesterday afternoon just as the storm moved into the area and she barely had time to get back in her house before the tree blew fell onto her house and into her yard.

“By the time I’m actually in the house, the tree fell.  If I would have been outside a second earlier, then the tree would have hit me, more than likely.  I had no clue you know, but the tree fell and I have never ever seen any rain like I did yesterday and the wind.  It was something else,” said Smith.

Smith said they had a garden in the front yard and after the cleanup hope to plant some new trees in their yard.

“So, now we’re going to have to start over.  But, that’s ok.  We can start over.  That’s no problem,” said Smith.

Just a few streets over on Poplar Street in Versailles, Resident Billy Hunter had a 100 foot weeping willow tree fall over in his back yard.

“We had one in the back here and one right here.  It just blew over from some much rain, it got heavy and blew over”, says Hunter.

Hunter says he planted the tree 14 years ago and it’s sentimental to lose part of his property.

“Yeah, because I watched it grow from a baby, so it killed me,” says Hunter.

If he doesn’t take immediate action to cut this tree down, he may run into problems in the future since this tree leans into another weeping willow tree on his property.

“If I don’t get some limbs off of it you know it’s going to push that one over next week when it starts raining and we get some more storms.  So, I’ve got my work cut out for me,” said Hunter
